일본군 병사의 눈으로 본 동학농민군 진압
이 글은 일본군 병사가 남긴 일기를 활용하여 일본군의 동학농민군 진압을 살폈다. 청일전쟁을 수행하기 위해 파견된 제10연대의 행로를 확인할 수 있었던 『진중일지(明治二十七年 陣中日誌)』는 일본군이 부산으로 들어와 대구를 중심으로 동학농민군을 순찰했음을 입증하였다. 그 이유는 일본군 병참선의 군용전선을 보호할 목적이었다. 군용전선을 절단하는 사건이 일어나자, 일본군은 동학농민군을 혐의자로 붙잡아 고문하고 취조하였다. 그 뿐만 아니라 참수(斬首) 혹은 목살(木殺)과 같은 방식으로 목숨을 빼앗기도 하였다. 제19대대의 행로를 확인할 수 있었던 『종군일지(日淸交戰 從軍日誌)』는 일본군이 인천으로 들어와 서울-경기-충청-경상-전라도를 거쳐 다시 충청-경기도로 돌아왔음을 재확인할 수 있었다. 이 이동경로는 일본군 병참선을 따라 내려가는 모습을 띠었다. 또 ‘동학농민군 토벌대’라는 이름에 걸맞게 이 과정에서 전라도 장흥지방 동학농민군을 진압하는 활동을 하였다. 그 과정에서 많은 동학농민군이 총살(銃殺), 돌살(突殺, 착검한 총을 돌격하여 찔러 죽임), 타살(打殺, 총이나 몽둥이로 때려죽임), 소살(燒殺, 불 태워 죽임) 등으로 처참하게 목숨을 빼앗은 사례도 정리할 수 있었다. 이 일기 속에서 민간인 학살 혹은 약탈과 관련된 내용도 살필 수 있다.
The suppression of Donghak Peasant Army through the eyes of Japanese soldiers

This reconfirmed that the Japanese military entered Incheon and returned to Chungcheong-Gyeonggi-do after passing through Seoul(서울) - Gyeonggi(경기) - Chungcheong(충 청) - Gyeongsang(경상) - Jeolla(전라)-do. This route took the form of descending along the Japanese military logistical line. In addition, the Donghak Peasant Army was suppressed in the process to match the name of Donghak Peasant Army’s subjugation team in Jangheung, Jeolla-do.
