신미년(1871) 영해 관아의 공간적 기능 - 『신미아변시일기』를 중심으로 -
『신미아변시일기』는 1871년 영해 관아습격 사건을 논의하려고 모인 향회(鄕會) 인사들이 작성한 보고서 형식의 텍스트다. 본 연구는 이 『신미아변시일기』에 나타난 표현들을 통해 당시의 지배 이데올로기를 살펴보고자 했다. 영해 관아습격 사건은 전패를 보존하려는 세력과 없애려는 세력들 간에 빚은 대격돌이었다. 다시 말해 영해 관아습격 사건은 조선의 지배 이데올로기의 수혜자와 그 대척점에서 새로운 세상을 꿈꿨던 세력 간에 벌어진 투쟁으로 목숨 걸고 전패를 지키고자 민첩하게 대응한 남유진과 공권력에 의해 일일천하로 끝난 하나의 사건이었다. 신미년의 영해 관아는 역사적 공간으로서 두 세력의 관점이 동시적으로 존재하는 장소로 재탄생되었다. 하나는 지배 이데올로기의 수혜자들이 권력 유지를 위해 반드시 사수해야 하는 헤테로토피아적 공간이다. 조선의 지배 담론을 정당화시켜 피지배층을 억압하고 통제하는 공간으로서 현실화한 유토피아로서의 헤테로토피아다. 또 하나는 지배 이데올로기의 비수혜자들이 반드시 파괴하고 새롭게 건설할 이상향으로서의 유토피아적 공간이다. 지배층이 식민화한 피지배층이라는 계급과 신분을 해체하려는, 즉 조선의 신분제 사회를 정당화시키는 공간으로써 지배권력을 위해 작동하는 헤테로토피아에 대한 이의제기인 셈이다. 따라서 『신미아변시일기』는 관아습격에 관한 단순한 사건 기록이 아닌 ‘영해 관아’라는 특수한 공간에서 벌어진 사건에 대한 책임을 면피하기 위해 인부를 지키려다 주검이 된 부사 이정의 충절을 앞세워 선처를 이끌려는 기록으로, 상부에 보고하는 경위서 성격이 짙은 텍스트라 할 수 있다.
Spatial Function of the Yeonghae Government Office in the year of Shinmi(1871) : Focused on “Shinmi Abyeon Diary”
“Shinmi Abyeon Diary” is a text in the form of a report written by the local gentry associates gathered to discuss attack on the Yeonghae government office in 1871. This study attempted to examine the ruling ideology of the time through the expressions shown in this “Shinmi Abyeon Diary”. The attack on the Yeonghae government office was a fierce battlefield between the forces trying to preserve the wooden plate that symbolize the king(殿牌, Jeonpae) and those trying to eliminate it. In other words, the attack on the government office was an event that ended in one day by Nam Yu-jin with the government power, who responded nimbly to protect the wooden plate that symbolize the king by risking their lives as a struggle between the beneficiaries of Joseon’s ruling ideology and the forces who dreamed of a new world at the opposite side. The Yeonghae government office in the year of Shinmi was reborn as a historical space where the perspectives of the two forces existed at the same time. One is a heterotopic space that the beneficiaries of the ruling ideology must defend in order to maintain power. It is a heterotopia as a utopia that has been realized as a space to suppress and control the ruling class by justifying the ruling discourse of Joseon. The other is the utopian space as an ideal that the non-beneficiaries of the ruling ideology must destroy and newly build. It is an objection to the heterotopia that works for dominance as a space that justifies Joseon’s status-based society to dismantle the class and status of the dominant class colonized by the ruling class. As a result, “Shinmi Abyeon Diary” is not a record of incidents simply related to the attack on the government office, but a record of trying to lead the favorable arrangements with the loyalty of Lee Jeong, Yeonghae government head officer who was killed while trying to keep the official seals in order to avoid responsibility for the incident in a special space called “Yeonghae Government Office”. It can be said that it is a text with a strong character of a report to the superior office.
