한국독립운동과 의암 손병희의 역사적 평가 - 종교와 국가 관계 안에서 지도자 역할을 중심으로 -
이 연구의 목적은 손병희를 천도교라는 종교 지도자, 3·1운동에만 활동한 지도자로만 국한하는 선행연구의 한계를 극복하는 것이다. 이를 위해 손병희라는 인물을 식민지 조선에서 종교와 총독부의 관계, 그리고 그 속에서 종교라는 조직을 이끄는 지도자에 초점을 맞춰 살펴 보고자 한다. 이 연구의 내용은 먼저 총독부와 종교의 관계다. 1910년대 식민지 조선에서 개신교, 천주교, 불교, 유교, 대종교, 천도교의 활동은 총독부의 공인종교 정책과 종교분열 정책에 영향을 받았다. 다음으로 조직의 지도자다. 지도자는 조직을 지휘하고 보호하고 응집하는 의무가 있다. 이 시기 식민지 조선의 종교에서 이 역할을 제대로 한 것은 천도교의 손병희 뿐이었다. 이 연구의 결과는 첫 번째 천도교는 1910년대 총독부의 유사종교 정책으로 피해를 받았지만 개신교나 불교, 유교와 같이 분열하지는 않았고, 대종교처럼 만주로 이전하지도 않았다. 두 번째는 천주교와 마찬 가지로 분열하지 않은 유이한 종교였으나 천주교가 항일독립운동에 소극적인 반면 천도교는 항일독립운동에 적극 뛰어들었다. 이는 손병희가 큰 역할을 했기 때문으로, 그의 활약은 단순히 종교지도자, 3·1운동 대표가 아니라 한국독립운동의 지도자, 조직의 큰 지도자로 봐야 한다.
The Korean Independence Movement and Historic Evaluation of Uiam Son Byung-Hee : Focusing on the Leader’s Role in Religion and State Relations
The purpose of this study is to overcome the limitations of previous studies that limited Son Byung-Hee only to the religious leader of Chondoism and the leader who was active only in the March 1st Movement. To this end, this study would like to focus on the relationship between religion and the Japanese colonial Government in colonial Joseon, and the leader who leads the organization called religion in colonial Joseon. The contents of this study are the first, the relationship between the Japanese colonial government and religion. The activities of Protestantism, Catholicism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Daejonggyo, and Chondoism in colonial Joseon in 1910 were influenced by the Japanese colonial Government’s official religion policy and religious division policy. The second is the leader of the organization. Leaders have a duty to direct, protect and cohesive the organization. Only Son Byeong-hui of Chondoism was able to properly fulfill this role in the religion of colonial Joseon during this period. As a result of this study, the first Chondoism was damaged by the Japanese colonial Government’s pseudo-religious policy in the 1910s, but it did not divide like Protestantism, Buddhism, or Confucianism, and it did not migrate to Manchuria like Daejonggyo. The second was the only religion that did not split with Catholicism, but Catholicism was passive in the anti- Japanese independence movement, while Chondoism actively jumped into the anti-Japanese independence movement. This is because Son Byeong-hee played a big role, and his activities should be viewed not only as a religious leader or representative of the March 1st Movement, but as a leader of the Korean independence movement and a great leader of the organization.
