경기지역 동학농민군의 활동과 성격
1894년 동학농민혁명 당시 경기지역에서 동학농민군의 활동이 매우 활발하였음을 확인하였다. 경기지역에서 동학농민군의 활동이 있었던 지역은 연천현, 양주목, 양근군, 지평현, 광주목, 여주목, 이천부, 음죽현, 용인현, 수원부, 죽산부, 안성군, 양성현, 진위현 등 평택현(충청도)을 포함하여 총 15개 군현이다. 대략 경기도의 반에 가까운 군현에서 동학농민군의 활동이 확인되고 있다. 이는 강원도나 경상도 그리고 충청도에 비해 규모나 활동 면에서 뒤지지 않았음을 의미한다. 지역적으로 보면, 주로 충청도와 인접한 진위현, 양성현, 안성군, 죽산부, 수원부, 용인현, 음죽현 등 남부와 강원도와 인접한 연천현, 양주목, 양근군, 지평현, 광주목, 여주목, 이천부 등 동부지역에서 동학농민군의 활동이 활발하였다. 이러한 사실은 경기지역 동학농민군들이 충청도 북부지역 및 강원도 서부지역과 교류하고 영향을 주고 받았음을 의미한다. 경기지역 동학농민군은 1894년 동학농민혁명 1차 봉기 과정에서 활동은 거의 포착되지 않는다. 이들이 활동을 전개하기 시작한 것은 2차 봉기 직전인 8월부터이다. 이후 2차 봉기 과정에서 대대적인 활동을 전개하여 결국 많은 동학농민군들이 체포되거나 목숨을 잃었다. 경기지역 동학농민군은 대부분 최시형의 동학 교단의 영향력 하에 있었다. 그런데 이들은 이미 1890년 초반부터 동학도로서 활동하고 있었다. 그것은 이들의 조직이 단순히 1894년 2차 봉기과정에서 형성된 것이 아니라 오래전부터 조직화되어 있었다는 의미이다. 경기도 각 지역의 동학농민군 지도자들은 대부분 대접주, 수접주, 접주, 접사 등 동학 조직의 책임자였다. 경기 지역 동학농민군 활동의 특징을 살펴보면, 먼저 동학농민혁명에 참여한 이들이 사대부 자제, 마름, 관포군, 농민 등 매우 다양한 출신성분으로 구성되어 있다는 특징을 가지고 있다. 이와 함께 동학농민군 진압과 관련하여 동학농민군으로 참여하였다가 피신한 경우, 그들의 재산을 몰수하는 상황이 실제로 확인된다는 점이다.
Activities and Characteristics of Gyeonggi Area Donghak Peasant Army
In 1894, it was confirmed that the Donghak Peasant Army was very active in the Gyeonggi area during the Donghak Peasant Revolution. In Gyeonggi Area, there were about 15 counties and prefectures where Donghak Peasant Army were active including Yeoncheon-hyeon, Yangju-mok, Yanggeun-gun, Jipyeong-hyeon, Gwangju-mok, Yeoju-mok, Icheon-bu, Eumjuk-hyeon, Yongin-hyeon, Suwon-bu, Juksan-bu, Anseong-gun, Yangseong-hyeon, Jinwi-hyeon and Pyeongtaek-hyeon (Chungcheong-do). Activities of the Donghak Peasant Army have been confirmed nearly half of counties and prefectures in Gyeonggi-do. This means that compared to Gangwon-do, Gyeongsang-do, and Chungcheong-do, they were not behind in terms of scale and activities. Geographically, Donghak Peasant Army was active Jinwi-hyeon, Yangseong-hyeon, Anseong-gun, Juksan-bu, Suwon-bu, Yongin-hyeon, Eumjuk-hyeon and other southern regions adjacent to Chungcheong-do, and Yeoncheon-hyeon, Yangju-mok, Yanggeun-gun, Jipyeong-hyeon, Gwangju-mok, Yeoju-mok, Icheon-bu and other eastern regions adjacent to Gangwon-do. This fact means that the Donghak Peasant Army in the Gyeonggi area exchanged and influenced the northern regions of Chungcheong-do and the western regions of Gangwon-do. The activities of the Donghak Peasant Army in Gyeonggi area during the first uprising of the Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1894 were hardly captured. They started their activities in August, just before the second uprising. Afterwards, during the second uprising, large-scale activities were conducted, and in the end, many Donghak Peasant soldiers were arrested or lost their lives. Most of the Donghak Peasant Army in Gyeonggi area was under the influence of the Donghak organization of Si-hyeong Choe. However, they had already been participated in Donghak Movement since the early 1890s. This means that their organizations were not simply formed during the second uprising in 1894, but had been organized for a long time. Most of the leaders of the Donghak Peasant Army in each region of Gyeonggi-do were in charge of Donghak organizations such as Daejeopju, Soujeopju, Jeopju, Jeopsa and others. Looking at the characteristics of Donghak Peasant Army's activities in the Gyeonggi area, first, those who participated in the Donghak Peasant Revolution have a characteristic that they are composed of very diverse backgrounds, such as nobleman’s children, the supervisor of a tenant farm, Gwanpo army, and farmers. At the same time, in relation to the suppression of the Donghak Peasant Army, it was confirmed that their property and possessions were confiscated when they were found to be participating in Donghak Peasant Army even after they escaped.
