동학사상과 경상도 예천지역 양반의 디스토피아적 세계관 -『학초전』을 중심으로-
본 연구는 갑오년 기록인 관변 측의 『갑오척사록』과 최근에 학계의 기대를 모았던 『학초전』을 비교하여 학초의 저작이 사료적 가치가 있는지를 분석하였다. 근래, 경상도 지역의 동학 관련 연구가 활발해짐에 따라 이러한 문제의식은 학초가 쓴 내용이 불분명하여 동학 입도에 대한 경위와 날짜뿐 아니라 ‘박학래’라는 인물 표기에 오류가 있다는 연구로 확장된다는 심각성에서 비롯되었다. 지금껏 경상도 예천지역의 동학 연구가 관변 측의 자료를 토대로 진행되던 상황에서 동학군 측을 대변하는 자료가 발굴된 만큼 『학초전』에 대한 철저한 분석이 요구된다고 할 수 있다. 이를 위해 동학농민운동에 가담했던 박학래의 『학초전』과 동학농민군 저지를 위한 본부에서 진압과정을 기록한『갑오척사록』을 비교하여 객관적인 시각을 정립하고자 하였다. 그간 학계가 『학초전』을 반긴 건 사료적 가치 때문이다. 하지만 『학초전』은 동학과 농민운동 관련 기록보다는 한 인물의 영웅적 서사를 다룬 문학 작품으로 읽히는 데다 ‘화지 동산 전투’에 대한 관변 측의 기록인 『갑오척사록』과 차이를 보였다. 경상도 지역에서 치러진 ‘화지 동산 전투’를 끝으로 예천의 동학농민군이 해산했다는 역사적 사실로 볼 때 『학초전』의 기록은 신뢰하기기 어렵다. 어떤 이유에서든 역사적 사실이나 인물을 각색해서 쓴 글은 사료적 가치보다는 문학적 가치로 접근하는 게 타당할 것이다. 따라서 『학초전』은 사료로서 접근하기보다는 한 인물의 생애를 다룬 기록물로서의 고찰이 주요하다는 것이 본 연구의 결론이다.
Donghak Thought and a Dystopian Worldview of Yangban in Yecheon, Gyeongsang Province -Focused on the Hakchojeon
This study compared the Gapocheoksa-rok on the official side, which is the record of the year of Gabo in 1894, and the Hakchojeon, which was recently expected by academia, to analyze whether the work of Hakcho(鶴樵, 朴鶴來, 1864~1942) has historical value. In recent years, as Donghak-related research in Gyeongsang Province has become more active, this awareness of the problem stems from the seriousness of expanding to research that there is an error in the character notation of Park Hakrae as well as the details and dates of his Donghak’s entry. At a time when Donghak research in Yecheon, Gyeongsang Province has been conducted based on data from the government, a thorough analysis of Hakchojeon is required as data representing Donghak military have been discovered. To this end, the research tried to establish an objective perspective by comparing Park Hakrae’s Hakchojeon, who participated in the Donghak Peasant Movement, and Gapocheoksa-rok, which recorded the suppression process at the headquarters to stop Donghak Peasant Army. The reason why academia has welcomed the Hakchojeon is because of its historical value. However, Hakchojeon is read as a literary work dealing with a character’s heroic narrative rather than records related to dynamics and peasant movements, and it differs from Gapocheoksa-rok, an official record of the Battle of Hwaji Dongsan. Given the historical fact that the Donghak Peasant Army in Yecheon was disbanded after the Battle of Hwaji Dongsan in Gyeongsang Province, the record of Hakchojeon is hard to trust. For any reason, it would be reasonable to approach historical facts or characters as literary values rather than historical values. Therefore, the conclusion of this study is that Hakchojeon is more important than approaching it as a historical record that deals with a character’s life.
