Haewol emphasized equality in his first sermon. And equality here is interpreted to include equality between men and women. But surprisingly, Haewol had three wives. However, the fact that Haewol had three wives was not an intentional bigamy unlike the one found in male-dominated society. Haewol, who met a new world through Su-un, the founder of Daonghak, devoted his entire life to spreading the thought of Donghak. And in such a process of suffering, he met three wives one after another. Based on this premise, this study was conceived from the perspective of finding and commemorating the contribution of Haewol's wives to the development of Donghak·Chondogyo while illuminating the lives of each of them. This paper is developed as follows. First, I will give a detailed biographical explanation of the lives of the three wives of Haewol. It reveals that although they lived different lives, they all lived through much more suffering than ordinary women at that time due to the commonality that they were the wives of Haewol, the leader of Donghak. Second, according to the chronological classification of Haewol's activities in Donghak, I will evaluate the lives of the three wives and examine their meanings. Based on this ground, I will reconstruct the historical background in which they lived and classify the hardships they had to go through by type. Finally, I will examine the reason why Haewol had no choice but to get married three times from the private and public aspects of Haewol’s life. In addition, I will suggest that the follow-up studies on the activites of the three wives of Haewol need to be continuously carried out within the studies of Donghak·Chondogyo, and based on such a result, I will also emphasize that the issue of appropriate courtesy commensurate with the influence and achievements of the three wives should be paid attention to at the denomination level.
