1920년대 전반 북간도의 천도교와 민족운동

이 연구의 목적은 1920년대 전반 북간도 지역의 천도교의 상황과 천도교인의 민족운동에 대해 살펴보는 것이다. 연구의 방법은 천도교회의 자료와 일본의 정보문서, 신문과 잡지, 조사보고서, 선행 연구 등의 활용이다. 연구의 내용은 첫째 1920년 경신참변 후 천도교인의 증가와 천도교회의 확장, 그리고 그 배경에 대한 검토이다. 둘째 신장된 교세를 바탕으로 천도교청년들이 전개한 문화운동에 대하여 고찰하였다. 셋째 천도교인들이 북간도 등지에서 전개한 민족운동에 대하여 살폈다. 연구의 결과 다음과 같은 사실이 규명되었다. 첫째 1921년도부터 포교 활동을 벌인 결과 천도교를 통해 사회를 개벽하려는 사람들이 대거 천도교에 입교하여 북간도지역 천도교인의 수는 1922년 초 1,600명에서 1923년 6월에는 2,000~3,000명 정도로 증가하였다. 천도교회는 연길교구와 용정교구와 화룡교구 외에 1920년대 초 왕청현의 백초구교구, 화룡현의 두도구교구, 훈춘교구가 증설되었다. 둘째 북간도의 천도교 청년들은 1920년대 초 천도교청년회 용정지회와 연길지회와 화룡지회와 왕청지회, 그리고 용정 천도교여자청년회를 조직하고 교육과 강연과 언론을 통한 문화운동을 전개하였다. 셋째 천도교회와 천도교 교육기관을 통해 양성된 천도교인들은 대한민국임시정부 등의 독립운동단체와 연계하여 독립운동을 전개하였고, 한인의 권익을 옹호하기 위한 사회운동을 벌였고, 적기단·광명회·전권단(CK단) 등의 사회주의단체에 참여하여 사회주의적 독립운동을 전개하였다. 이 연구는 북간도 한인민족운동의 사회적 배경을 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 것이다.

National Movement of Cheondogyo and Cheondoists in North Gando, 1920~1925.

The purpose of this study was to examine the situation of Cheondogyo in the North Gando of China in the early 1920s and the national movement of Cheondoists. The method of research was based on data from Cheondogyo Church, information documents made by Japan, newspapers and magazines, survey reports, and prior research. The contents of this study were first on the growth of Cheondoists, the expansion of Cheondogyo curch, and the background of these after the tragedy in 1920. Second, based on the newly established religious order, the cultural movement done by the youth of Cheondogyo was considered. Third, the national movements of Cheondoist in North Gando and other areas were examined. The following facts have been identified as a result of the study. First, as a result of missionary work from 1921, the peoples who dreamed the change of human being and society entered into Cheondogyo. So the number of Cheondoists in the North Gando increased from 1,600 in early 1922 to 2,000 to 3,000 in June 1923. In addition to the Yeongil Diocese, Yongjeong Diocese and Hwaryong Diocese, Baekchogu Diocese of Wangcheng County, Dudogu Diocese of Hwaryong County, and Hunchun Diocese were expanded in the early 1920s. Second, the youth of Cheondogyo in North Gando organized the Yongjeong Branch of the Cheondogyo Youth Association, Yeongil Branch, Hwaryong Branch, Wangcheong Branch, and Yongjeong Cheondogyo Women’s Association in the early 1920s, and conducted cultural campaigns through education, lectures, and media. Third, Cheondoists, who were trained through Cheondogyo and Cheondogyo educational institutions, conducted independence movements in conjunction with independence activist groups such as the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, held social movements to defend the rights and interests of Koreans, and participated in socialist independence movements by participating in socialist organizations such as Jeokgidan, Gwangmyeonghoe, and the Chon-kwon-dan. The study will be useful in understanding the social background of the Korean people’s movement in North Gando.
