The purpose of this study is to understand Donghak’s Gaebyeok Thought from a utopian perspective. While active discussions have been conducted on Donghak’s Gaebyeok Thought, discussions through critical review on utopia have not been sufficient. This article attempted to clarify the characteristics of the Donghak Gaebyeok Thought through T. More’s utopia ideology and critical discussions on it. The contents of the study are as follows. First, centering on T. More’s theory of utopia, the background, contents and role of utopia were introduced, and the relationship between Donghak and utopia was presented. Second, the contents and characteristics of Donghak’s Gaebyeok Thought and the appearance of the ideal society were presented through the discussion of the Donghak scriptures and researchers. Third, we discussed what conditions are necessary for utopia to be realized. The results of the study are as follows. First, utopia emerged to overcome the exploitation of nobility and the collapse of values, and is related to Donghak in that it criticizes reality and predicts ideal society. Second, it was discussed that Donghak’s Gaebyeok Thought is based on a the inevitable laws of the universe, and that heaven on earth is aiming for construction through the realization of community of a man of virtue. Third, in order to realize utopia, it is necessary to overcome the dichotomy of good and evil and follow criticism and actions.
