해월 최시형의 동학경전 간행의 역사적 의의 - ‘그 현재적 의미’를 중심으로
해월의 치적은 크게 보아 수운의 동학사상을 계승하면서도 그 사상을 해석하고 또한 그 의미를 실천으로 확장시켰다는 점에서 높이 평가할 수 있다. 그런데 그러한 변화 · 발전의 배경은 수운 생각의 원래의 뜻을 집대성한 것에 머물지 않고 한 걸음 더 나아가 편집하고 활자화한 것에 놓여 있다고 하겠다. 이러한 변화의 모습을 우리는 한마디로 ‘구술문화’로부터 ‘문자문화’로의 이행이라고 규정할 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 그 변화의 구체적 의미를 ‘음독(音讀)의 종교 공동체’로부터 출발한 동학이 ‘묵독(黙讀)의 대중종교 공동체’로 도약하려는 모습으로 묘사할 수 있을 것이다. 그러한 의미로 그 모습을 전통을 넘어서 도래가 임박한 현대화를 예비한 선견지명(先見之明)적인 시도였다라고 평가할 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 관점에서 해월 최시형의 동학경전 간행의 역사적 의의는 단지 지나간 역사적 회고에만 머물지 않고, ‘지금 또 여기’에 생생하게 살아있는 현재성으로서 적극적으로 찾아야 할 것이다. 이러한 전제를 바탕으로 본 논문은 다음과 같은 과정을 통해 전개된다. 첫째는 해월 최시형의 동학경전 간행의 과정을 살펴보고, 지금까지 수행된 경전 간행의 역사적 의의를 조명해 본다. 둘째는 해월 최시형의 동학경전 간행 계기를 미시적 차원으로 고찰한다. 즉 동학경전 간행을 동학의 구조변동의 동인(動因)으로 파악하면서, 그러한 구체적 모습을 ‘음독의 종교공동체’로부터 ‘묵독을 통한 사회적 연대’로의 변화라고 규정하고 그 의미를 논의한다. 셋째는 위의 논의를 염두에 두고 해월 최시형의 동학경전 간행의 계기가 지니고 있는 현대적 의미, 혹은 그 의미의 현재성에 대해 논의한다. 여기서는 먼저 동학경전 간행으로 인하여 구술문화로부터 문자문화로의 변화가 주었던 효과가 무엇인지를 규명하고 그 성격을 분석한다. 그리고 동학이라는 종교 공동체의 구조변동이 부여하고 있는 현대성의 의미가 무엇인가에 대해 논의한다.
About the Historical Meaning of Hae-wol, Choi, Si-hyung's Publication of the Dong-hak Scripture - Focussing on 'its present Meaning'
Hae-wol, Choi, Si-hyung's achievement is in the great scheme highly rated in regard that he was in succession to Su-wun’s thought, interpreted his thought and furthermore he expanded that meaning into the realm of practice. However, the background of such a change and development is due to not only compiling Su-wun’s thought but further editing and publishing. Such a change can be justified as the transformation from 'oral culture' to 'text culture'. And it can be said that the specific meaning of that change contains the feature of Dong-hak which is jumping into 'silent reading - religious community' started from 'reading aloud - religious community.' And such a change can be evaluated as an attempt of foresight preparing imminent modernization beyond tradition. From those viewpoint, the historical meaning of Hae-wol's publishing-project must be pursued not only as a reminiscence in the past, but also as a nowness living alive 'now and here'. This paper will be discussed as follows. First, I will examine the process of Hae-wol's scripture publication of Daong-hak and look at the historical meaning of it up to present. Second, I will explore the meaning of the momentum of Hae-wol's publishing-project in the microscopic dimension. That is, I will apprehend the scripture publication as a factor of structural change of Dong-hak, and justify such a fact as a transformation from 'the reading - religious community' into 'the social solidarity via the silent reading’. Third, I will discuss the contemporary meaning or the meaning of nowness of Hae-wol's publishing-project. Here, at first I speculate the effect of the transformation from 'oral culture' to 'text culture' and analyze its character. And then I will argue what is the meaning of modernity which the structural change of religious community, Dong-hak presents.
