고부봉기에 관한 기존 연구 성과와 과제
본 연구는 동학농민혁명의 출발점을 무장기포로 보는 기존의 시각에 반론을 제기하고 고부봉기야말로 혁명의 시작이라는 관점에서 진행되었다. 논쟁의 단초는 사발통문의 진위에서 촉발되어 사발통문의 4대 결의사항이 시간적 간격을 두고 기록되어 제대로 실행되지 않았다는 것이다. 과연 고부봉기에서 4대 결의사항에 관한 실행을 문제 삼는 것이 타당한지, 4대 결의사항을 기록한 시점에 따라 고부봉기의 위상을 달리해야 하는지 따져볼 일이다. 그런데도 사발통문을 분석한 결과치로 고부봉기를 민란이라고 주장한 한 연구자의 프레임을 추종하는 다수의 연구자에 의해 40여 년이 지났음에도 무장기포가 동학농민혁명의 시작으로 인정받고 있다. 그러나 명백하게도 동학농민혁명의 시작이 무장인지 고부인지에 관한 논쟁은 그 어느 때보다 치열하다. 여전히 현재진행형이라는 말은 한 연구자가 씌운 프레임 전쟁이 끝나지 않았다는 의미로, 그의 주장에 동조하는 연구자가 많을수록 무장기포가 동학농민혁명의 시작이라는 그의 주장은 역사적 사실로 받아들여질 것이고, 그렇지 않은 연구자가 많아 진다면 수정되어야 한다. 고부봉기를 동학농민혁명의 출발점으로 보는 연구자와 그 반대편에 선 연구자의 첨예한 논쟁이 그 어느 때보다 활발한 지금이 한국 역사를 가장 역사답게 접근하는 태도로써 새로운 패러다임을 제시할 절호의 기회다. 이제 더는 한 연구자가 씌운 프레임 안에서의 연구를 멈추고 역사적 사료의 여백을 새롭게 해석·분석하여 역사적 진실에 다가설 수 있는 유의미한 연구 성과를 거둘 때다. 역사 연구는 특정한 개인의 주장에 의해서 독점되는 불변의 도그마가 아니다. 동학혁명사 연구 또한 역사적 사료가 남긴 여백들을 비판적으로 분석하고, 검토하는 과정을 통해 역사적 진실에 다가가도록 끊임없이 재해석되어야 하는 이유이다. 따라서 고부봉기 관련 연구에 지대한 영향을 미친 한 연구자의 프레임을 재구성할 때라야 창의적인 분석과 새로운 해석이 가능할 것이다. 과학혁명을 통해 새로운 패러다임이 등장함으로써 정상과학이 시작된다는 토머스 쿤의 주장처럼 지금이라도 동학농민혁명의 시작으로 무장기포설을 주장한 프레임을 전복시킬만한 새롭고도 혁명적인 연구 성과가 절실히 요구되는 시점이다.
Existing Researches and Future Directions in the Gobu Uprising
This study raised a counterargument to the existing view that the starting point of the Donghak Peasant Revolution was Mujanggipo(茂長起包) and was conducted from the perspective that the Gobu Uprising(古阜蜂起) was the beginning of the revolution. The beginning of the controversy was triggered by the authenticity of the Round Robin(沙鉢通文), and the four major resolutions of the Round Robin were recorded at intervals of time and were not properly implemented. It is worth considering whether it is appropriate to question the implementation of the four major resolutions in the Gobu Uprising, and whether the status of the Gobu Uprising should be changed depending on the time when the four major resolutions were recorded. Nevertheless, as a result of analyzing the Round Robin, Mujanggipo is recognized as the beginning of the Donghak Peasant Revolution by many researchers who follow the frame of one researcher who claimed that the Gobu Uprising was a civil rebellion, even after 40 years have passed. However, clearly, the debate over whether the Donghak Peasant Revolution started at Mujang or not is more intense than ever. The fact that it is still ongoing means that the frame war put forward by one researcher is not over. The more researchers who agree with his claim, the more his claim that the Mujanggipo was the beginning of the Donghak Peasant Revolution will be accepted as a historical fact, and there are many researchers agree with his claim, and if there are more researchers who do not, it should be revised. This is a great opportunity to present a new paradigm as an attitude to approach Korean history the most historically, with the sharp debate between researchers who view the Gobu Uprising as the starting point of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and those who stand on the other side more active than ever. Now is the time to stop researching within the frame set by a researcher and achieve meaningful research results that can help us get closer to historical truth by newly interpreting and analyzing the margins of historical materials. Historical research is not an immutable dogma monopolized by specific individual arguments. This is why research on the history of the Donghak Revolution must also be constantly reinterpreted to approach the historical truth through the process of critically analyzing and reviewing the blank spaces left by historical sources. Therefore, creative analysis and new interpretation will be possible only when reconstructing the frame of a researcher who had a great influence on research on the Gobu Uprising. As Thomas Kuhn argues that normal science begins with the emergence of a new paradigm through the Scientific Revolution, even now is the time when new and revolutionary research results are desperately required to overthrow the frame that advocated the theory of Mujanggipo at the beginning of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
