The Donghak and Buan-Doso Activities of the Kim Nak-cheol Brothers

Kyutae Cho

This paper examines the Donghak activities and Donghak Peasant Movement of Kim Nak-cheol and Kim Nak-bong, representative Donghak leaders in Buan, Jeonbuk. First, the background, origin, and characteristics of the Kim Nak-cheol brothers’ admission to Donghak were reviewed. Subsequently, the Buan-Doso activities and their characteristics of the brothers Kim Nak-cheol during the Donghak Peasant Movement are the main points of this research. Finally, we will examine the trends of the Kim Nak-cheol brothers after the Donghak Peasant Movement in relation to the maintenance activities and modernization movements of Donghak. The Donghak of Kim Nak-cheol and Kim Nak-bong, who entered the school through Yun Sang-oh, Kim Yeon-guk’s disciple in 1890, emphasized the practice of Confucian virtues such as Gyeong-cheon(敬天), Gyeong-in(敬人), and Gyeong-sim(敬心). Therefore, he did not rise up during the first Donghak Peasant Movement, and when Donghak Peasant Army entered Buan, he carried out activities to prevent disturbances such as killing the president and officers of Buan. However, after the Japanese occupation of Gyeongbokgung Palace and the provocation of the Sino-Japanese War in June 1894, he participated in the repair of Buan-Doso by participating Confucian scholars and the general public. In September 1894, he gave up under the order of the Donghak leadership and participated in the Battle of Ugeumchi. After the Donghak Peasant Movement, the Kim Nak-cheol brothers contributed to the reorganization of the Donghak under Kim Yeon-guk. Therefore, Kim Nak-cheol and Kim Nak-bong did not participate in the Gapjin Enlightenment Movement led by Son Byung-hee. Through this study, it is possible to reveal the religious characteristics and activities of the Donghak Peasant Army in Jeolla-do, which developed an edifying movement rather than an armed transformation. In addition, it can help to find out that a large number of Confucian scholars participated in the Donghak Peasant Army’s Dosso after the Japanese occupation of Gyeongbokgung Palace. This will contribute to revealing a righteous character of the Donghak Peasant Movement.
