The relationship between revolution and independence movement

Eulkyung Jeong

The number of Donghak (Eastern Learning) believers of the Japanese colonial period is estimated to be 700,000 to 800,000 persons. However, the registers of the believers from Chungnam who can be identified now are just found from 『Biographic Dictionary of Donghak Believers』 published by the religious body in 2015 and the lists of the believers left in Buyeo, Yesan, Seosan, and Nonsan. That is, the believers who are applicable to 1/10 of the then estimated believers are just identified. Selecting the believers from Chungnam in these lists of names, the Donghak believers from Chungnam have found to be 2,237 persons. And among them, the believers who directly participated in the Donghak Peasant Revolution are 816 people, the rate of 36.4%. Now, the participants in the Donghak Peasant Revolution registered in the National Commission on the Donghak Peasant Revolution are 3,644 people and among them, the participants in Honam are 2,043 people, the participants in Chungcheong are 1,103 people, the participants from Chungnam are 816 people. Execpt the believers whose their hometowns were not clearly identified, hometowns of Donghak believers in Chungnam have found that Seosan is highest as 17.1%, followed by Dangjin, Nonsan, Yesan, and Gongju. In Seosan, more than 30 leaders of the peasant army were rescued by attacking Seosan Government Office and the Donghak Peasant Revolution including setting fire to the government office and the government officials’ houses were fiercely developed in it. And Donghak’s religious influence were powerful in All the Chungnam areas including Dangjin, Nonsan, Yesan, and Gongju where a lot of Donghak peasant armies participated in the Donghak Peasant Revolution. And the Donghak believers’ rate and participation has a great correlation with Seosan in that there were important battles in the Donghak Peasant Revolution. In order to select people who were active in the Religious Body of the Heavenly Way after participating in the the Donghak Peasant Revolution among the total 2,237 people from Chungnam who participated in the Donghak Peasant Revolution, 405 people who could not live because of being shot dead, being burnt at the stake, or being missing after participating in the Donghak Peasant Revolution were ruled out. Then, the people who were active in the Religious Body of the Heavenly Way in the details among the total 1,832 people who participated in the Donghak Peasant Revolution have found to be total 67 people. That is, 3.67% of the participants in the Donghak Peasant Revolution were active in the Religious Body of the Heavenly Way assuming positions. This rate is not low by judging the numerical value. There were the peasant armies that did not participate in the revolution even though they believed in Donghak and there were the cases that the peasants who participated in it were not recorded because of being active as the general believers without positions of the Religious Body of the Heavenly Way. Therefore, the numerical value is very meaningful in that the peasants who had participated in the revolution and had almost lost their life again were active in the Korean Independence Movement and activities sought by the religion trusting in the religious body. As the peasants who were leaders including Jeopju among 67 people were 24 people and the peasants who participated in the Donghak Peasant Revolution in Chungnam several times were 18 people, they have the high rates. And over half of the peasants among them were characterized by participating in the Donghak Peasant Revolution in Naepo. The people who did not have positions in the Religious Body of the Heavenly Way among 67 people were just 13 people. That is, more than 80% of them had important positions in the religious body. The Donghak Peasant Army that led the peasant armies with the ability to command in the Donghak Peasant Revolution had also important positions in the Religious Body of the Heavenly Way. That is, positions and participation in Donghak is thought to continue to have an effect on the Heavenly Way. In addition, 4 of 67 people were have found to participate in the Korean Independence Movements with the Donghak Peasant Revolution in the details. Park, Inho played a huge role in the expansion of Donghak’s religious influence in Chungnam by doing activities to spread virtue in the whole area as the 4th religious leader of the Heavenly Way. And as he was selected as one of the 48 Korean Leaders of the March First Independence Movement, he groaned in prison for 1 year and 9 months and was involved in Donghak and the Heavenly Way and strived to be independent during life including leading the June 10th Movement in 1926 and Prayers for Destroying Japan in 1938. Next, Cho, Wonsang was from Buyeo, Chungnam, who had important positions in the Religious Body of the Heavenly Way after participating in the Donghak Peasant Revolution. As he heard intent of the Declaration of Independence of the Joseon Dynasty from Hwang, Wuyeol, received 5 sheets of the declaration from him, distributed 2 sheets to the roads of Jungjeong-ri and Yeomchang-ri, Buyeo-myeon and gave the rest 3 sheets to Kim, Deokbin around 5:00 on the same day, and asked him to distribute them to Buyeo, he was sentenced to 7 months by carrying on the independence movement, which led to the March First Independence Movement. And Lee, Jongseon participated in the Gapjin Reform Movements and the Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1889 and continued to be active in the Religious Body of the Heavenly Way since then, and did the independence movement by participating in the Korean Indepence Movement in 1943. Choi, Junmo was from Seosan-gun and is the independent activist who represented the Heavenly Way including participating in being active in the Religious Body of the Heavenly Way that did in the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the March First Independence Movement.
