As Donghak changed its name to Chondogye and renewed itself as a modern religion, Chondogye conducted aggressive national movements under Japanese imperialism and led the March First Independent Movement. This is why Chondogye is showing just as much enthusiasm and action as other religious groups in overcoming the division of the Korean peninsula. Furthermore, when we consider the relationship with Chondogye in the North Korean areas, which is situated as the greatest religion there, it could be said that Chondogye relatively satisfies objective conditions to take action in inter-Korean exchange and unification. The ideal national unification theory pursued by Donghak basically follows the logic presented during the era of the Chondogye Chongwoodang under Japanese colonial rule. This is because the ideology they have pursued since Donghak is still valid and is still in process of completion. The purpose of Donghak presented by the Chondogye Chongwoodang was bogukanmin (輔國安民) and podeokcheonha (布德天下). Bogukanmin is the phased purpose while podeokcheonha (heaven on earth) is the idealistic purpose. In short, people’s comfort can be achieved after we realize national interests, and heaven on earth can be achieved after we realize people’s comfort. The official unification plan of Chondogye, the Independent National Unification Theory, was completed in November 2002. The independent national unification plan suggested the central ideas of Donghak as innaecheon (人乃天: Human beings are Heaven), bogukanmin, donggwiilche, and gaebyeok, and suggested the political ideology as democratic politics, democratic economy, democratic culture, democratic ethics and neo-nationalism, and the social ideology as ethical democracy, ethical free circulation economy, and ethical culture development. Unification in Donghak is not unifying the two divided into one by artificial force, but reunification in the sense of returning what was originally one to one. First, it can be said that the unification approach that Donghak Chondogye should pursue in this era is to recognize each other first, find a common denominator that can be easily agreed upon, and create an excuse for exchange.
