The March 1 Revolution and the Birth of Gaebyeok

Hyungjin Rim

After the defeat of the Donghak Revolution, Uiam Son Byung-hee, who was the last leader of the revolution, changed Donghak to Chondokyo and led the national movement from the 1900s. He carried out reforms to raise public awareness through media, education, and publishing movements. It was believed that only people with high citizenship could create modernization. However, during the cultural movement, national rights were lost. So Son Byeong-hee decided to achieve independence within 10 years and started preparing. This preparation had to be pursued more secretly and more carefully, With the construction of the Bonghwanggak in Ui-dong in 1912, his preparations became more concrete. From 1913, 483 Chondokyo workers from all over the country were called in order to conduct special training. The excuse was training, but the content was in the education of talented people for the independence movement. With the end of World War II in 1918, the international situation faced a new phase. Cheondogyo has become the largest religion on the Korean Peninsula. Cheondokyo had enough personnel, organizations, and funds to counter the Japanese imperialism, but they could not repeat the failure of the Donghak Revolution in which only them participated. For him, the 3.1 Revolution had to be the second Donghak Revolution. So he reached out to all parties and all political parties. He appealed to join the national movement. Finally, when Protestantism and Buddhism joined in, the demonstration for national independence as a united character of the religious world could begin. However, due to the failure of the 3.1 Revolution, a long-term movement had to be entered. That was the national cultural movement, and it was Gaebyeok magazine that was created as a part of it. The “Gaebyeok” magazine, which began to be published on June 25, 1920 at the same time as the establishment of the Gaebyeok Company, is highly regarded as the first modern comprehensive magazine that made a significant contribution in the history of the Korean newspaper movement. The history of “Gaebyeok” was the history of the Korean people in itself, and the wounds received by the Japanese imperialism by “Gaebyeok” were to represent the national tragedy. Whenever published, Gaebyeok promoted Innaecheon ideology, and published articles on humanism, liberalism, and socialist new trends, becoming a leader in the ideological world as well as the national cultural movement at that time.
